This is a record of activities from our monthly meetings.
Focus on Joinery: December 2023
December’s featured topic is joinery, a woodworking method that is used due to its longevity and strength without using any mechanical fasteners. I will display a variety of joinery samples and explain their applications. After I demonstrate the techniques each person will practice laying out and cutting a dovetail joint using saws and chisels.
As usual you are welcome to continue on your own with activities covered during prior months including chip carving, chisel sharpening and tuning a plane.
Hand Planes: November 2023
November’s featured topic is hand planes. I will demonstrate how to tune them and how to use them. I will have planes on hand for you to try out. If you bring in your own plane I will help you evaluate what steps are needed to bring it into good shape.
Chip Carving: October 2023
The featured activity this month will be chip carving. Chip carving is an easy-to-learn way to carve designs on a piece of soft wood with a knife. Basswood pieces will be available for sale. Chip carving knives will be available to use at the meeting and can be borrowed for a few weeks to continue your carving.
Chisel Sharpening: September 2023
Geo demonstrated sharpening chisels and participants practiced sharpening their own chisels. Equipment on hand: Tormek water cooled grinder, ceramic stones and composite water stones.
